Newry Street

Census of Ireland 1901

Newry Street as a place does not appear in the BI summary sheets of the Census. This is one of a number of anomolies described in the Crossmaglen main page. By a process of elimination I have selected the street named as 'Creggan Street' in the Census returns as most likely to be the right one. If anyone knows differently I would be grateful for any correction.

The Census enumerated 114 persons in 20 households; a ratio of 5.7 people per household. The households occupied a total of 99 rooms, a ratio of 5 rooms per household and 1.2 people per room. One of the households occupied 10 rooms; two occupied 9; four occupied 7; four occupied 6; one occupied 3 and eight occupied 2.

Native Irish Speakers

Of the 20 households enumerated in the Census, seven contained at least one native Irish speaker - 11 in all. Since theirs was the last generation to have been born into a predominently Irish speaking environment, their names, occupations and ages are recorded here. Five were born in Co. Armagh, with Susan Quinn, Bridget Quinn and Mary Hannon born in Co. Monaghan, John Hannon in Co. Galway, John Hannon (Jr) in Co. Leitrim and Denis McCloskey in Co. Tyrone.

  • John Quinn, general labourer, 63
    his wife Susan, 55
and a boarder Bridget Quinn, dealer, 80
  • James Begley, farmer and grocer, 56
  • John Hannon, RIC pensioner, 68
    his wife mary, 58
and son John, national teacher, 31
  • Denis McCloskey, retired teacher, 85
  • Mary Hearty, general domestic servant, 47
  • Mary Morgan, nurse, 60
  • Mary McDermott, lodger with Ellen Carefoot, laundress, 60

Of the group, nine could read and write, one could read and one could neither read nor write.

Names of House and Property Holders (1)

The following table sets of the names of those who owned or rented houses and/or property at the time the valuation records or population censuses were compiled. Unlike the scheme adopted in the townlands, the names are not listed alphabetically and the following table reproduces the order in which they appear in the records.
