Valuation Although the decimalisation of the currency was introduced only in 1971, all of the valuations in the following table have been converted from £sd for convenience.
The increase in rateable value in 1970 was due to the construction of 32 public authority houses in the townland in the 1960s. The 1837 Townland Valuation recorded only houses worth £5 or more a year. There were four such houses in the townland -
Griffiths Valuation records the owner of the most of the land as the representatives of John Reed. James Geraghty is recorded as having a forge. In 1935 The forge was owned by James Sammon. Census of Ireland 1901 The Census enumerated 81 people in 14 households. Excluding Patrick Cunningham- with 8 rooms and 16 people - the other 13 households comprised 65 people; a ratio of five people per household. These households occupied a total of 31 rooms, a ratio of 2.4 people per room. Three of these households, totalling eight people, lived in single room accommodation; seven lived in two rooms, and three had 4 or more rooms. Native Irish Speakers Of the 14 households enumerated in the Census, four contained at least one native Irish speaker - 5 in all. Since theirs was the last generation to have been born into a predominently Irish speaking environment, their names, occupations and ages are recorded here. All were born in Co. Armagh, with the exception of Norah Ruddy, born Co. Monaghan.
Population Decline The following table sets out the number of houses and population enumerated in the townland in each of the 11 Censuses held between 1841 and 1951.
The population of the townland declined between 1841 and 1861 - following the pattern of most others. However, by 1871 the population was higher than in 1841. This surge, the reason for which is not known, did not last and from 1881 the population fluctuated without further decline. By 1970 the development of public housing had dramatically increased the habitation and population. Names of House and Land Holders (3) The following table sets of the names of those who owned or rented houses and land on the townland at the time the valuation records or population censuses were compiled. |
