Location
Tullynavall is a large townland of 846 statute acres and 37 perches about five miles north of Crossmaglen, beside the village of Cullyhanna. It is bounded on the north by Tullyvallen and Tullyvallen (Tipping) East, on the east by Dorsey, on the south by Lurgancullenboy and Cregganduff, on the west by Freeduff and on the northwest by Cullyhanna Big. In the 1828 Tithe Applotment Books the total area of the townland is shown as 508 acres and 23 perches (Plantation Irish measure). Name of townland Tullach na bhFál, "The hedged hill" or Tor na bhFál, "the hedged round hill" (1) There is no other townland of that name in Ireland. Ordnanace Survey Name Books: Creggan Parish (2) TULLYNAVAL (OSNB i 1): There is part of the remains of an ancient entrenchment to be seen in the td. the remaining part is In Dorsey - the land is high of a light soil producing superior crops of oats, potatoes and there is (a) good deal of detatched bog and uncultivated land here. There is also a school on its N. [W.?] boundary.
Valuation Although the decimalisation of the currency was introduced only in 1971, all of the valuations in the following table have been converted from £sd for convenience.
The 1837 Townland Valuation recorded only houses worth £5 or more a year. There was only one such house in the townland-
Griffiths Valuation records the name of the owner of the townland as Re. Alex H. Synge. Census of Ireland 1901 The Census enumerated 154 persons in 62 households; a ratio of 2.5 people per family. Native Irish Speakers Of the 62 households enumerated in the Census, 14 contained at least one native Irish speaker - 15 in all. Since theirs was the last generation to have been born into a substantially Irish speaking environment, their names, occupations and ages are recorded here. All were born in Co. Armagh, with the exception of Patrick Gogarty, born in Co. Louth.
* Of the group, nine could read and write, an six could neither read nor write. Population Decline The following table sets out the number of houses and population enumerated in the townland in each of the 11 Censuses held between 1841 and 1951.
In the period of 110 years, the number of households dropped by 57% and the population by 62%. The initial fall of 14% between 1841 and 1851 - the famine years, was followed by a short period of stability into the 1860s before the start of a continuing decline up to the 1951 census. Names of House and Land Holders (3) The following table sets of the names of those who owned or rented houses and land on the townland at the time the valuation records or population censuses were compiled. |
