This early christian cross, dating from the nineth century, and standing at the east end of Down Cathedral, is badly eroded, but the image of Christ Crucufied is still visible. The cross is thought to have originally located in the early monastic enclosure on the Hill of Down (not far from where it is now). Later it was placed at the bottom of Irish Street whre it was known as the Market Cross before it was broken up and the parts distributed. In the late nineteenth century the pieces were traced and in 1897 the cross was placed in its present position. |
